《TICAD 7 in Yokohama》【“Picture Diary of Environment” – The future as drawn by the children of Africa】

An exhibition featuring pictures created by African children, “Picture Diary of Environment,* ” was jointly presented by the Yokohama Resources and Waste Recycling Bureau, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and JICA’s Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) as a collaborative project with the African Clean Cities Platform in Osanbashi Hall on December 2.

The thoughts and dreams of the local youths and volunteers serving in Africa were captured in over 600 "picture diary" pieces produced by children there.
During the event, a JOCV volunteer who had lived in Africa drew on their experiences to give additional perspective to the pieces. They also demonstrated making a "kendama," a traditional Japanese toy, from plastic bottles, an activity they used in Africa when teaching about the environment. Visitors wrote messages to the young artists in Africa, which JOCV volunteers will deliver.

It is hoped that people will treasure the "connections" made possible through this event, and that the hearts of the people of Yokohama and the children of Africa will be brought closer together.

* "Picture Diary of Environment" is an initiative of the Yokohama City Recycle Resources Association. It was created in 2000 to promote opportunities for children to talk about environmental problems with friends and family through journals they would write and illustrate and to foster their environmental awareness. In recent years, there has been a growing number of ideas put forward to solve other issues facing society, resembling the 17 goals of the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs.

The African Clean Cities Platform was established in April 2017 through the joint efforts of African nations, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, JICA, and the City of Yokohama. It is engaged with sharing knowledge on waste management techniques, achieving the SDGs, and other work with the goal of realizing clean and healthy cities in Africa.
