Boosting Business Support and Promotion Participation be Women

In cooperation with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and JICA, Yokohama annually holds the Africa Business Seminar, teaching about the business environment of Africa to companies in the city.
Under the African Business Education Initiative for Youth (ABE Initiative), the Japanese government and JICA accept eligible young men and women as students in Japan, where they receive college educations and internship training at companies. Yokohama actively encourages companies in the city to participate in the program, which can lead to expansion of their own businesses in Africa.

In the TICAD V thematic meeting Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in Driving Development in Africa, Mayor Fumiko Hayashi proposed that Yokohama work with JICA to build a women’s network. Since then, women entrepreneurs from Africa come to Yokohama every year to meet and discuss with their counterparts in the city as part of the Japan-Africa Business Women Exchange Program. In August 2018, as part of this program, the Emerging Female Entrepreneurs Forum was held, in which Mayor Hayashi gave an opening speech.
